Amanda Seyfried, the guest on this episode of The Hollywood Reporter’s Awards Chatter podcast, which was recorded in front of 500 film students at Chapman University, is one of the most talented, versatile and popular screen actresses of her generation.
Seyfried is only 39, but she has been working in the business for more than 25 years. Her credits include big-studio blockbusters like 2004’s Mean Girls, 2008’s Mamma Mia! and 2010’s Dear John; edgy indies like 2009’s Chloe and 2013’s Lovelace; award-winning pics like 2012’s Les Miserables, 2017’s First Reformed and 2020’s Mank, for which she received a best supporting actress Oscar nomination; and standout TV programs including the HBO drama series Big Love from 2006 through 2011, the 2022 Hulu limited series The Dropout, for which she won Emmy, Golden Globe and Critics Choice awards, and, most recently, the Peacock limited series Long Bright River, which dropped March 13.

Long Bright River, on which Seyfried also served as an EP, was adapted from Liz Moore’s bestselling novel of the same name by Moore and Nikki Toscano, and its eight episodes were directed by a lineup of female directors including Mona Fastvold, the Oscar-nominated co-writer of The Brutalist. The show centers on Mickey Fitzpatrick (Seyfried), a Philadelphia cop and single mother who, in the midst of the opioid epidemic, begins investigating the disappearance of a number of drug-addicted sex workers — including her own sister. And reviews have centered on Seyfried, who is now very much in contention for a best actress in a limited or anthology series or TV movie Emmy nomination.
